These jeans have been worn for about 1.5 years and washed every few months. Check out how the shell stitching makes little dots next to the fly. That was just a happy accident. Apparently the knee wear comes from the way he uses a weaving loom. Note how the extra-strong Pima yarns in the weft are still there, while the shorter staple, warp yarns have worn away.
